Plant-based vs Veganism: What’s the Difference?
Veganism and Plant-based eating have been trending ever since a plethora of informative documentaries had been released. Films such as Food Inc., Forks over Knives, The Game Changers, and many more have inspired thousands to make the switch and ditch animal products and overly processed foods. Plant-based eating is not only good for you, but also benefits our environment and saves millions of animals from unnecessary harm.
So what is the difference between a plant-based diet and a vegan diet?
What is veganism?
Veganism can be done for both health and ethical reasons. Consuming too many animal products can affect our health but it is also not so great for the animals either. A vegan won’t eat dairy, meat, fish, poultry or eggs, sometimes honey. Some people take veganism farther than just their diets. In such instances, they won’t wear leather or wool and will also avoid using products that are tested on animals or contain animal ingredients.
What is plant-based eating?
Plant-based individuals, like vegans, avoid excessive animal products whenever possible. Focusing more on consuming plant-based foods, they still occasionally consume some form of animal protein every now and again. The goal is to not only eat as naturally as possible, but also help reduce the environmental impact of factory farming. But overall, a plant-based diet is very similar to veganism but with big focus on whole foods with a few exceptions for animal protein every now and then.
If eating that way spares a few animal lives and helps the environment, then it’s a win-win!
How do vegans get enough protein?
The first thing people ask is how do vegans get enough protein? Well how do herbivores get enough protein? From plants! Protein rich vegetables are plentiful from tofu and beans to complex whole grains like faro and buckwheat. Protein is everywhere, and not just from animals. It is possible for anyone to consume enough protein while on a whole food plant-based diet.
